PRESS RELEASE TEXT FOR CLIMATE EXTREMES: EXTREME WEATHER
New Documentary Climate Extremes: Extreme Weather Unpacks the Science Behind Extreme Weather Events
Released on 10 July 2025, Climate Extremes: Extreme Weather is the latest installment in the Climate Extremes documentary series, investigating the scientific causes of the world’s most intense weather disasters from devastating floods and heatwaves to wildfires. The documentary draws on the latest research and real-world case studies such as Los Angeles fires and Valencia floods, to explain how climate change is driving more frequent and more severe weather extremes. Viewers will hear directly from global experts as they break down the physical mechanisms such as increased atmospheric moisture, altered jet streams, and rising temperatures, fueling these events. The documentary features experts from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, ETH Zürich, and the University of California Agriculture and Natural Sciences.
Extreme Weather and a Warming World: The film shows how rising global temperatures are intensifying key weather patterns, leading to longer heatwaves, heavier rainfall, and more erratic seasonal behavior.
From LA to Valencia: Real-World Case Studies: Using powerful imagery and data, the documentary connects local disasters to global climate trends, examining events like wildfires in Los Angeles and floods in Valencia.
The Physics of Extremes: Experts explain the scientific foundations of extreme weather, including how a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture and wavy configurations of the polar jet stream leads to concurrent extremes.
Extreme Weather Preparedness: The documentary explores how improved data, early warning systems, and risk-based planning can help communities better prepare for and respond to extreme events.

New Documentary Climate Extremes: At the Abyss? Explores the Science Behind the Non-linearity of Climate Change
Released on 25 October 2024, Climate Extremes: At the Abyss? is a new documentary that delves into the science behind the non linearity of climate change, earth's tipping points, planetary boundaries and ocean circulations. Featuring insights from world-renowned scientists, the film investigates how seemingly small changes in climate can trigger large-scale, cascading impacts, potentially affecting ecosystems, weather patterns, and human communities on a global scale. The documentary features experts from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, and the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research.
Non-linear Change: what is “non-linear” change? How is it different from linear change? The film explores this very fundamental concept and emphasizes its importance in understanding Earth’s behavior.
Planetary Boundaries and Earth’s Stability: The documentary discusses the "Corridor of Life"—Earth's narrow temperature range necessary for stability—and the risks of crossing planetary boundaries.
Tipping Points and Non-Linear Climate Dynamics: The documentary explains how certain thresholds in the climate system can lead to unpredictable and irreversible changes.
Climate Feedback Loops: The documentary explores positive and negative feedback loops, showing how processes like ice melting and deforestation can accelerate climate change, pushing Earth past critical thresholds.
The Role of the AMOC: The documentary explores the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation's role in regulating temperatures and weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere and how a slowdown could have drastic effects
